Physic Flashcards
1-10
Describe the arrangement and motion of particles in a solid
Particles are closely packed in a regular arrangement. The particles vibrate about a fixed position.
Describe the arrangement and motion of particles in a liquid
The particles are closely packed in a random arrangement. The particles can move around each other.
Describe the arrangement and motion of particles in a gas
The particles are far apart, their motion is random and independent of the other particles.
What is the name of the change of state when a solid turns directly into a gas? What is the reverse called?
Sublimation and Deposition
Which state of matter is generally the most dense?
Solids
Give an example where this generalisation does not hold true
Liquid water is more dense than solid water (ice)
When do objects sink in water
If they are more dense than water (their density is greater than 1000kg/m3)
How do you measure the volume of an irregular object?
-Fill a eureka can with water
-Submerge the object in the water and measure the volume of displaced water with a measuring cylinder
How do you measure the density of a regular object?
-Using a ruler to find the dimensions
-calculate the volume
-measure mass using a balance
-calculate density (mass/volume)
What is a physical change?
A change which is reversible, for example a change of state where no new substances are formed.
