Phys Unit 9 -- Circuits Flashcards
What is a series circuit?
A circuit that has only one path for electrons to flow.
What is a parallel circuit?
A circuit with more than one path.
How does Voltage work in Series circuits?
They share the same load (VT = V1 + V2 …)
True or False: the current is never the same in a series circuit.
False! In a series circuit, the current is always the same. (IT = I1 + I2 …)
How does Voltage work in Parallel circuits?
Voltage in a parallel circuit is equal to the battery (VT = V1 = V2)
What is the definition of current?
The flow of electrons
What unit is Energy measured in? Give unit and letter.
Joules, J
Define Electric Power:
Rate of which electric potential energy becomes a device is used or transformed.
Give the unit for Power:
Watts, W
State the formula for calculating Power and its two alternatives. (PET)
P = E/t E = Pt t = E/P
time is in seconds
State the formula for calculating Power and its two alternatives. (Poison Ivy)
P = IV I = P/V V = P/I
When doing a “Paying for electricity” problem, what are the units?
Power: kW
Energy: kWh
Time: t (in hours)
Name the formula for cost
Cost = (enery in kWh) x (0.08/kWh)
0.08 is a changing value, it is NOT set in stone.
