Chem Unit 2.1 -- Elements Flashcards
Definition of Element:
Pure substance that cannot be broken down further
Name the three most common types of elements on the table:
- metals
- non-metals
- metalloids
What are the properties of a metal?
hard, shiny, very conductible. Malleable, ductile.
What are the properties of a non-metal?
- usually gas at room temperature
- brittle solids (breaks easily)
What are the properties of metalloids??
in between metals and non-metals
H
Hydrogen.
Colourless, tasteless, light and very flammable.
Fe
Iron.
Strong metal, very ductile, multivalent.
O
Oxygen.
Needed to breathe, usually found as a gas
Na
Sodium.
Very soft metal.
Cl
Chlorine.
Yellow-green gas, very deadly when concentrated.
Hg
Mercury.
Liquid at room temp. Shiny, good conductor.
Ag
Silver.
White hue, malleable.
Si
Silicone.
Most common element in Earth’s crust after oxygen.
