Phys Defintions Flashcards
Define Distance
Distancemeasures the length between objects or points without regard for direction.
Define Displacement
Displacement refers toan object’s change in position independent of the path taken.
Define Speed
The rate of change of position of an object in any direction
Define Velocity
quantity that designates how fast and in what direction a point is moving.
Define Acceleration
The rate of change of velocity with respect to time.
Define Force
The push or pull on an object with mass causes it to change its velocity
Define Work
the transfer of energy by a force acting on an object as it is displaced
Define Newtons First Law
An object at rest remains at rest, or if in motion, remains in motion at a constant velocity unless acted on by a net external force.
Define Newtons Third Law
for every action (force) in nature there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Define Newtons Second Law
F = ma, or net force is equal to mass times acceleration
Define Inertia
the resistance of any object due to changes in its motion or direction
Define Friction
force that resists the sliding or rolling of one solid object over another
Define Gravity
the force by which a planet or other body draws objects toward its center
Define normal force
the force that surfaces exert to prevent solid objects from passing through each other.
Define Energy
ability to do work, which is the ability to exert a force causing displacement of an object.
