phylogeny/life history Flashcards
what is phylogeny?
- the evolutionary history of a group of organisms
what is a phylogenetic tree?
- a model of how a group of organisms descended from a common ancestor
what is a monophyletic group?
- a group defined by a common ancestor
what are sister taxa?
- two taxa that share a common node
what is cladistic analysis?
- inferring phylogenetic relationships based on how evolution occurs on a tree
what is phenetic analysis?
- uses the measures of distance (branch lengths) between organisms to infer phylogenetic relationships
what are synapomorphies?
traits/characters that are derived and shared
what is convergent evolution?
two species that have the same trait because the trait evolved twice independantly
what is secondary loss?
a trait lost in the organism that it’s ancestor once had
what are homoplasies?
a character shared by species that isn’t present in the common ancestor
what is the concept of parsimony?
species evolve using the simplest route possible, essentially the fewest evolutionary changes
what is a derived character/trait
a character that is shared by the common ancestor
