basic bio stuff Flashcards
logical equivalence, pasteur experiment, cell theory, good studies
1
Q
what is logical equivalence?
A
when two statements express the same fact in different words
2
Q
what is the cell theory? (5 points)
A
- all living organisms are made up of cells
- cells are the basic unit of life
- all cells come from pre existing cells
- DNA is passed down through cells
- there is energy flow between cells
3
Q
what is the purpose of the pasteur experiment?
A
he tried to test whether a sterile nutrient broth could spontaneously generate microbial life (cells)
4
Q
the steps/conclusion
A
- pasteur filled two flasks with equal amounts of broth
- one flask had a straight neck, the other had a “S” shaped
- he boiled the broth in both flasks to kill any living organism (sterilized), then he left them out exposed to air
- after several weeks, the straight necked flasks was cloudy/discoloured and the curved neck flask was still the same
- he concluded that the germs were able to travel down the straight necked flask to enter the broth while they were trapped in the curvy neck of the other flask
- spontaneous generation wasn’t occurring because both broths weren’t cloudy and that the germs came from other germs
5
Q
3 things that make up a good experiment
A
- control, replication, randomization
6
Q
an example of a controlled experiment
A
- having a placebo and a testing group
7
Q
an example of a replicated experiment
A
- having replicates within a experiment
8
Q
an example of a random experiment
A
- units being assigned to a treatment randomly
