Photosynthesis/Cell Flashcards
Autotroph
an organism that is able to form nutritional organic substances from simple inorganic substances such as carbon dioxide.C
Heterotroph
an organism deriving its nutritional requirements from complex organic substances.Compare with autotroph.
Cellular Respiration
the process of cell catabolism in which cells turn food into usable energy in the form of ATP. I
Pigment
t is a substance that is either dry or else insolublein its liquid carrier. A pigment in liquid forms a suspension.
Chlorophyll
a green pigment, present in all green plants and in cyanobacteria, responsible for the absorption of light to provide energy for photosynthesis. Its molecule contains a magnesium atom held in a porphyrin ring.
Thylakoid membrane
Thylakoids are membrane-bound compartments inside chloroplasts and cyanobacteria. They are the site of the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis.
ATP
also known as ATP, is a molecule that carries energy within cells. It is the main energy currency of the cell, and it is an end product of the processes of photophosphorylation
Aerobic respiration
Aerobic respiration is the process of utilisation of oxygen to breakdown glucose, amino acids, fatty acids to produce ATP.
Anaerobic respiration
Anaerobic respiration is respiration using of electron acceptors, and other than of molecular oxygen
Glycolysis
cellular respiration that involved in cellular degradation of the simple sugar, glucose to pyruvate in order to yield high-energy molecules such as ATPand NADH.
Fermentation
an anaerobic process performed by a cell to generate chemical energy
