Photosynthesis and plant nutrition Flashcards
Stomata
Allows carbon dioxide to diffuse into the leaf and oxygen to diffuse out. They’re little holes on the underside of the leaf
Waxy cuticle
Protects the leaf from infection and prevents water loss without blocking out light
Xylem
Transports water and minerals
Upper epidermis
Allows light to get to the palisade cells
Guard cells
They open and close the stomata to allow gas exchange
Chloroplasts
Chlorophyll in the chloroplasts have the pigment that makes the leaf look green and they carry out photosynthesis
Lower epidermis
It’s a protective layer
Spongy layer
Allows air space
Phloem
Transports sugar
Palisade layer
Absorbs more light and increases rate of photosynthesis
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + water —> glucose + oxygen
What is the balanced symbol equation for photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H2O —> C6H12O6 + 6O2
