Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is the photosynthetic organ of a plant
the leaf
What does the palisade mesophyll do? (ground tissue)
contains the most chloroplast for photosynthesis
What does the spongy mesophyll do? (vascular tissue)
- holds water and dissolved gases
- distributes CO2 and H20 throughout the leaf (gas exchange with atmosphere)
What does the xylem do? (veins)
dead cells
transport water and minerals from the roots to the leaves (transpiration)
What does the phloem do? (veins)
living tissue
transports sugars from the leaves to the rest of the plant
What is the epidermis?
Layer of cells on top and bottom of leaf for protection
What is the cuticle?
Waxy coating
helps prevent water loss (and protection)
What is the stomata?
Pores that allow gas exchange
Opening is controlled by guard cells
What is a palisade cell filled with?
hundreds of chloroplast
What is photosynthesis?
The production of carbon compounds in cells using light energy
What is the balanced equation of photosynthesis?
6H20 + 6 CO2 === C6H1206 + 602
Plants synthesize ……. from ……..
organic matter from inorganic matter
Where do light dependent reactions take place?
thylakoid membranes in chloroplast
