Photosynthesis Flashcards
Rate of photosynthesis depends on…
…Availability of substrates (co2 and water)
Energy available (light intensity)
Kinetic energy available to move substrate and enzyme molecules (increasing temp)
Add more co2 to a plant…
…energy will eventually run out
Photosynthesis will stop
Increasing temp…
…speeds up reaction
Enzymes and substrates have more kinetic energy and collide more often
At high temps enzymes denature (reaction stops)
How is the leaf specialised for photosynthesis?
Large surface area and thin (maximise absorption)
Upper epidermis transparent (light penetrates to mesophyll)
Palisade cells ar long and thin and tightly packed, also lots of chloroplasts (maximises absorption sunlight
energy)
Stomata allow gases to diffuse into leaf (short diffusion distance for co2)
Xylem transports water into leaves (provides short distance for water to diffuse into photosynthesising cells)
