Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is the equation for photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide + water — glucose + oxygen
What 5 ways do plants use glucose
- Respiration
- Making cellulose - making strong plant cell walls
- Making amino acids - for protein synthesis
- Stored as oils or fats - for storage
- Stored as insoluble starch - storage
What does glucose need to produce proteins
Nitrate ions absorbed from the soil
Where does photosynthesis take place
Chloroplasts that contain chlorophyll that absorb light
What kind of reaction is photosynthesis and why
Endothermic
Energy is transferred from the environment (light) to the chloroplasts
What is meant by limiting factor
That it’s stopping photosynthesis from happening any faster
Factors can have a combined effect on the rate of photosynthesis, but which specific factor is limiting at a particular time depends on what?
Environmental conditions
Eg: night the light is limiting factor
Winter the temperature is a limiting factor
Warm and bright, amount of co2 is limited
What 4 things effect the rate of photosynthesis
- Temperature
- Light intensity
- Concentration of co2
- Amount of chlorophyll
How can chlorophyll be a limiting factor
The amount of chlorophyll in a plant can be affected by disease ( TMV)
Environmental stress - lack of nutrients
Can cause chloroplast to not make enough and the rate of photosynthesis is reduced because they can’t absorb as much light
