Photosynthesis Flashcards
Learn about what factors affect photosynthesis in plants
Name the 3/4 layers of a cross section of a leaf
- Upper epidermis
- mesophyll tissue {palisade mesophyll tissue, spongy mesophyll tissue}
lower epidermis
Why are there air spaces between the cells in the spongy mesophyll tissue of a leaf?
It is a quick route for gases to diffuse to the cells
What is the point of the waxy cuticle?
It stops excess water entering the leaf
What is the point of the palisade cell?
It is the main area of photosynthesis; it is full of chloroplasts.
Why are leaves green?
They are full of chlorophyll in the palisade cells. Chlorophyll is necessary for photosynthesis to occur
what are the three main factors that affect photosynthesis?
light intensity
temperature
carbon dioxide concentration
what gas is given off by plants?
oxygen
what does potassium hydrogencarbonate (KHCO3) do?
it releases CO2 and thus encourages photosynthesis
what % of air is oxygen?
21%
what are the purposes of air gaps in the spongy mesophyll layer?
to allow the CO2 and other gases to reach the palisade layer
what is the purpose of: the cuticle?
acts as protective covering
what is the purpose of: the upper epidermis layer?
is the top layer of cells
what is the purpose of: the palisade layer?
contains the most chloroplasts
which layer contains the upper palisade layer?
the upper epidermis layer
what is the purpose of: the spongy layer?
has large spaces between the cells
