Photosynthesis Flashcards
the steps
light dependent=
- light hits photosystem 2, energizing 2e-
- e- passed from electron carrier, lose energy
- 1 electron carrier used released energy from electrons to move H+ ions from stroma to thylakoid space by active transport
- H+ ions diffuses from thylakoid space to stroma through ATP synthase, casuing ATP synthase to spin, releasing energy
- ADP turns into ATP
light independent reactions
aka calvin cycle created by melvin calvin
stroma
needs=ATP, CO2, stroma, NADPH
uses: carbon dioxide, ATP, NADPH
makes: glucose, NADP+, ADP
light dependent reactions
thylakoid space
needs=water,light,NADP+,thylakoid, ADP
uses light,water,ADP,MADP+
makes:ATP,NADPH, oxygen, H+ ions
photosynthesis definition
the process occurring in the plant’s cells to produce the gas in the bubbles that appear
energy
is the ability to do work
autotrophs
self feeders ex tree, plant, algae
are able to use light energy from the sun to produce food
heterotrophs
other feeder ex; ominvore, carnivore, herbivore
obtain energy from food that they eat
where is the energy stored in food?
stored in chemical bonds
-heat, light, sound
ATP
is a molecule that stores and releases a small amounts of energy for short periods of time
stores a little energy
adenosine tri phsophate
adenine
ribose
and three phosphate groups
sugar=$100
ATP=$1
used for active transport=pumping molecules across cell membranes
muscle contractions
making proteins
growth and reproduction
glucose
good for storing lots of energy for a long tim
C6H12O6
1 glucose=38 ATP
photosynthesis location
in the chloroplast which is plants, algae, and some bacteria (cyanobasteria)
3 factors that affect photosynthesis
amount of light
temperature
water and CO2 (raw materials)
chlorophyll
is the pigment in chloroplast
pigment
a molecule that traps energy from sunlight
chloroplast
structure: outer membreane inner membrane stroma=light independent reaction grana thylakoid space=light dependent reaction
