Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is photosynthesis?
6(CO2)+6(H2O)—>C6H12O6+6(O2)
What are chloroplasts?
Cells where photosynthesis occurs
What is the cell wall?
Surrounds the cell and acts as a filtration system
What is chlorophyll?
A green pigment that absorbs light for photosynthesis (found inside chloroplasts)
What is cytoplasm
The material filling up space in a cell (not the nucleus)
What is the spongy layer?
A layer of cells in the interior of the leaf that have chloroplasts; has spaces between cells to facilitate the exchange of gases
What is the palisade layer?
A layer of cells just below the surface of the leaves that contain many chloroplasts
What are guard cells?
Pairs of two cells around each stoma (pores), that controls gas exchange
What are stomata?
Pores of the plant
What is the cuticle?
A protective layer covering the epidermis
What is the epidermis?
The outer layer of tissue
What is the light reaction?
The reaction the occurs as the first phase of photosynthesis, where light is converted to ATP
What is the dark reaction?
The Calvin Cycle; creation of ATP that relies on carbon dioxide instead of sunlight
