photosynthesis Flashcards
What is the roll of chlorophyll in Photosynthesis
Chlorophyll is contained in chloroplasts and chlorophyll is needed for photosynthesis. They are found on the top side of the leaf. They make chloroplasts on the top of the leaf so that is gets lots of sun or energy to make photosynthesis
Describe how light energy is used?
Light energy is used in photosynthesis which is the way in which plants make food.
What is the word equation for photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide + water + energy = glucose + oxygen
What is the by product of photosynthesis?
Oxygen
What three factors affect the rate of photosynthesis and how?
-light intensity
-carbon dioxide concentration
-temperature
Lots of light intensity will boost the speed of photosynthesis. A plant will not photosynthesise unless there is sufficient co2. If it gets too cold the rate of photosynthesis will decrease and if the plant gets too hot the plant will not photosynthesise
What is a limiting factor
Limiting factors are things that prevent a population from growing any larger examples are food, temperature, light intensity and co2 concentration.
What are the economics of enchanting conditions in a green house
Farmers can use their knowledge of the limiting factors of photosynthesis to increase the crop yields. This is paticularily true in green houses where conditions can be controlled
Relate the principle of limiting factors to the economics of enhancing conditions in a green house
The relation between limiting factors and the economics of enhancing conditions in a green house is that farmers can use their knowledge of limiting factors of the rate of photosynthesis in which brings up the economics of enhancing conditions in a green house
What do plants use nitrate ions for
Plants use nitrate ions to build proteins and growth. The deficiency symptoms are poor growth and yellow leaves
How are nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium able to enter the plant
The minerals dissolve in water so that the plant can absorb them through its roots. These minerals are involved in fertilisers
What do you do in the test for presence of starch
You put a leaf into half a beaker filled with boiling water. Leave it in there for a minute and then pull it out and put it in a test tube filled with Ethanol and then put the test tube in beaker of boiling water. Remove the leaf from the ethanol and wash it in cold water. Spread the leaf on a Petri dish and put a few drops of iodine on the leaf.
How does co2 get into the leaf
It gets into the stomata which is controlled with guard cells if the conditions are right they will open
How does oxygen get out of the leaf?
It gets out of the stomata which is controlled by guard cells if the conditions are right they will open.
What does the phloem do
The phloem transports food
What does the xylem do
The xylem transports water to the leaf
