Photosynthesis Flashcards
What are the three limiting factors affecting the rate of photosynthesis?
Light
Temperature
Carbon dioxide
What do green plants and algae use light energy for?
To make their own food
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide+water —> glucose+oxygen
What is the name of the green substance which light energy is absorbed by?
Chlorophyll
Where is chlorophyll found?
In chloroplasts in some plant cells and algae
How is the energy in photosynthesis used?
By converting carbon dioxide and water into glucose
What is oxygen released as?
A by-product
Above 40C what happens to enzymes?
They are denatured
What happens to the glucose produced in photosynthesis?
It is converted into insoluble starch for storage
What do plant cells use some of the glucose for?
Respiration
Some glucose in plants and algae is used to?
- Produce fat and oil (for storage)
- Produce cellulose (strengthens cell wall)
- Produce proteins
What does cellulose do?
Strengthens the cell wall
How do plants produce proteins?
They use nitrate ions that are absorbed from the soil
