Photosynthesis Flashcards
What colour is chlorophyll?
Green
What colour are carotenes?
Orange
What colours are anthocyanins?
Red/purple/blue
What are accessory pigments called?
Carotenoids
What is the main pigment?
Chlorophyll a
What is the method for chromatography?
1) pigments dissolved in solvent & absorbs into chromatography paper
2) smaller/more soluble molecules travel further
3) compare calculated RF with table of known values to identify pigment
How do you calculate RF value?
Distance moved by pigment/distance moved by solvent front
Why aren’t RF values absolute?
-solvent used to grind
-solvent used to run it
-species of plant
-type of paper
What does absorption spectrum show?
How much light a particular pigment absorbs at different wavelengths of light
(Chlorophyll a peak absorption is at 435nm and 670/80 nm
What does action spectrum show?
Rate of photosynthesis at different wavelengths of light
(Volume of O2 released per unit time)
What do both spectra demonstrate?
Superimposing graphs suggests pigments are involved in photosynthesis
What are the light dependent stages of photosynthesis?
Cyclic and non-cyclic phosphorylation
What is the light independent stage of photosynthesis?
Calvin cycle
Where do light dependent stages take place?
Thylakoid membrane of grana
What are products of light dependent stages?
Oxygen
ATP
NADPH
Where does the light independent stage take place?
Stroma
What are the products of light independent stage?
Hexose
NADP
ATP +Pi
