Photosynthesis Flashcards
What are photons?
Light Molecules
What is the name given to the type of light that our eyes absorb?
white light
What two main colors of light do most plant leaves absorb?
red and blue
Why do plant leaves appear green?
chlorophyll pigments reflect green
What are pigments?
color sacs that plants reflect / anything that has the ability to absorb light
What is chlorophyll and what are the names of the two types?
Where pigments are stored, there is Chlorophyll A(in the middle) & B(surrounds it)
Some plants break down A during the fall
Which part of the spectrum has the most energy? Why?
Violet because it has the shortest wavelength
What happens when atoms in a pigment absorb light?
they get exited
What happens in a redox reaction? Explain thoroughly.
Something will get oxidized and reduced. Oxidizing loses electrons, and reduction gains electrons.
Why is it said that “Every oxidation involves a reduction”?
One cant happen without the other.
Where are chlorophyll pigment molecules found? Be specific.
Palisade Mesophyll → chloroplast → thylakoid membrane → inside photosystem
Where are the light reaction’s electron transport chains found in the plant?
In the Thylakoid membrane
Where does the entire process of photosynthesis take place?
Palisade Mesophyll and Chloroplasts
Write the chemical formula for the photosynthesis reaction. Label the reactants and the products.
6 CO2 + 6 H20 + Light energy → C6H12O6 + 6 O2
Name the two main stages of photosynthesis and tell where each takes place.
Light reactions and Calvin Cycle(in stroma)
