Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is Photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is the process of turning Carbon Dioxide and Water into Glucose and Oxygen with the help of light energy.
What is the word equation for Photosynthesis?
Carbon Dioxide + Water = Glucose + Oxygen
What are some Leaf Adaptations?
1) Greener: More Chlorophyll
2) Thinner: Easier for diffusion
3) More surface area: more sunlight
Order of leaf layers from top to bottom.
On the outside is the Cuticle, just under that is the Upper Epidermis, below that are the palisade mesophyll then the spongy mesophyll, next is the lower epidermis. On the lower epidermis there are stomata, which are controlled by guard cells. Throughout the leaf are leaf veins.
What is the function of the Cuticle
Waxy Layer that is waterproof. Avoids drowning the leaf cells.
What is the function of the Epidermis Cells?
Protective layer of transparent cells on leaf surface.
What is the function of the Palisade Cells?
Cells containing chloroplasts where photosynthesis takes place.
What is the function of the Spongy Mesophyll?
Cells that absorb water and have air spaces around them.
What is the function of the Leaf Vein?
Contains xylem cells that transport water from the roots to the leaf and phloem cells that transport glucose sugars from the leaf to the plan
What is the function of the Stomata?
Small holes on the epidermis allows gases and water into and out of the leaf.
What is the function of the Guard Cells?
Cells that control opening and closing of stomata
