Cell Parts Flashcards
Nucleus
Is the control centre containing all the genetic information for the cell which controls all cell activities
Cytoplasm
Contains a soup of chemicals in which the reactions occur. The cytoplasm gives the cell shape
Cell Membrane
Forming the outside of the cell acts as a barrier and controls the transfer of materials into and out of the
cell
Small vacuoles (vesicles)
Store food and chemicals and floating in the cytoplasm. Animal cells have many small vacuoles whereas plant cells have a large central vacuole
Mitochondria
Is the place in which the cell converts food into energy (called respiration). Many animal cells, eg. muscle cells and nerve cells, have a lot of mitochondria because they use more energy.
Endoplasmic reticulum
Transport system inside the cell
Ribosomes
Site of protein production. Most cell (and body structures) are made of protein
Golgi apparatus
Package and release proteins from the cell
Cell wall
Made of fibres of cellulose that gives them shape and strength. The cell wall fits closely just outside the cell membrane
Chloroplasts
Small round green organelles called, which contain the green pigment chlorophyll, photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplasts where plants make glucose sugar from light, carbon dioxide and water. Chloroplasts are usually on the outside of the cell so they are close to light and the raw materials they need.
Large Vacuoles
Store food and chemicals and floating in the cytoplasm. Plant cells have a large central vacuole where as animal cells have many small vacuoles because plants make food during the day by photosynthesis. This needs to be stored. The vacuole also gives extra support to the cell by pressing hard against the cell wall.
