Mitosis, Meiosis, Cell Cycle and Processes Flashcards
What is Mitosis?
When a parent cell divide into two daughter cells. These are only for Somatic cells (body cells).
What is Meiosis?
When a parent cell divides twice and produces four daughter cells. These are only for Gametes (Sex cells).
What is the process of the cell cycle?
G1, S, G2, M
What is the G1 part of the cell cycle?
First Growth Phase:
Growth and normal metabolic roles
What is the S part of the cell cycle?
Synthesis Phase:
DNA replication (Copy DNA)
What is the G2 part of the cell cycle?
Second Growth Phase:
Growth and preparation for mitosis
What is the M part of the cell cycle?
Mitotic Phase:
PMAT
What is Prophase?
Pair, the chromosomes pair up.
What is Metaphase?
Middle, chromosomes line up along the middle of the cell.
What is Anaphase?
Apart, one chromosome of each pair goes to each end of the cell.
What is Telophase?
Two, the parent cell starts splitting into two daughter cells.
Why are cancer cells dangerous?
Cancer cells undergo uncontrolled cell growth and division. As such, they are defects of the control of the cell cycle.
(Chemotherapy of cancers is aimed towards interrupting the cell cycle and preventing the cancer cells from
dividing.)
