Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is the purpose of photosynthesis and what type of cells carry it out?
- sunlight energy is converted to energy of glucose
- carried out by plants and other autotrophs
Where does photosynthesis occur and when?
- occurs in the CHLOROPLAST
- only occurs during the day
What is the worded and a balanced chemical equation for photosynthesis?
Worded:
carbon dioxide + water → glucose + oxygen
Balanced:
6CO2 + 6H2O → C6H12O6 + 6O2
Know the structure of a chloroplast.
STROMA - liquid filling inside
GRANA - stacks containing thylakoid in the inner membrane where light reactions occur
THYLAKOID - contains all chlorophyll in the organelle
CHLOROPHYLL - green light absorbing pigment
INNER/OUTER MEMBRANE
Name the TWO stages of photosynthesis and where they occur in a chloroplast:
1) Light Dependent Reaction -
what: H20 is split by light energy to produce energy carriers(ATP and NADPH)
location: thylakoid membrane
2) Calvin Cycle -
what: energy transferred form ATP and NADPH to carbon dioxide to form glucose
location: stroma(cytoplasm of chloroplast)
What goes into and what is made in each of these two stages.
1) LD -
input: H2O, light energy
output: oxygen, energy carriers(ATP and NADPH)
2) CC -
input: carbon dioxide, energy carriers
output: glucose
