photosynthesis Flashcards
what is the balanced chemical equation of photosynthesis
6CO(2) + 6H(2)O –> C(6)H(12)O(6) + ^O(2)
what are some mineral ions used by plants?
nitrates - required to make amino acids
magnesium - required to make chlorophyll
[phosphates - required to make nucleic acid]
what are the limiting factors of photosynthesis?
carbon dioxide concentration, temperature, light intensity
how do plants maximise absorption of sunlight
large surface area and thin
how is the upper epidermis adapted?
transparent to allow light to get to mesophyll
describe the palisades and its uses
long and thin cells that are tightly packed, contains a lot o chloroplasts
main site of respiration
what do the stomata do?
they allow gasses to diffuse in the air spaces of the eaves which creates a short diffusion distance
what does the xylem do?
transports water from the roots to the leaves, which shortens the diffusion distance of water
what does the phloem vessel do?
transports sugars produced in photosynthesis to different part of the plant
