Photosynthesis Flashcards
Photosynthesis Word Equation
Carbon Dioxide + Water –> Glucose + Oxygen
Photosynthesis Balanced Symbol Equation
6CO2 + 6H2O –> C6H12O6 + 6O2
Where does photosynthesis take place
In the chloroplasts in the leaves
what is the name of the pigment that makes leaves green
Chlorophyll
Waxy cuticle
Layer on top and bottom of the leaf that helps to prevent water loss (stops bacteria from coming in as well)
storage of glucose in plant cells
starch
Upper epidermis
Thin transparent structural layer of cells to allow light to reach the cells underneath
Palisade layer
Layer of cells near the top of the leaf that are packed full of chloroplasts to maximise the rate of photosynthesis
Spongy layer
a layer of rounded cells in the middle of the leaves with air spaces between them to allow for gas exchange
Vascular bundle
‘Veins’ in the leaf which are used to transport water and dissolved substances
Lower epidermis
Layer of cells on the underside of the leaf that have pores called stomata
xylem
transport water and minerals up the stem from the roots
Stomata
Pores in the underside of the leaf that can open and close to allow for the diffusion of CO2 into the leaf
Guard Cells
Specialised cells that open and close the stomata that allow for the diffusion of CO2 into the leaf
