Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is the energy absorbed by photosynthetic pigments used for
Excites electrons which are then passed through electron transport chain releasing energy for ATP synthase to generate ATP.
Also used in photolysis to spilt water into oxygen and hydrogen.
What happens to light that is not absorbed
Transmitted or reflected
What does the absorption spectra show
Shows the wavelengths of light absorbed by each pigment.
What does the action spectra show
The rate of photosynthesis at different wavelengths of light.
Role of carotenoids
Extend the range of wavelengths absorbed and pass the energy to chlorophyll for photosynthesis.
What colours do chlorophyll mainly absorb
Blue and red
What happens to the hydrogen that is produced from the photolysis of water
Transferred to the coenzyme nadp to become NADPH2
What is the first stage of photosynthesis called
Light dependant stage
What are limiting factors of photosynthesis
Light intensity
Temperature
C02 concentration
What fixes carbon dioxide to RuBP
RuBisCO enzyme
What is the CO2 acceptor
RuBP
What is the second stage of photosynthesis
Carbon fixation or Calvin cycle
How is G3P formed
3PG is phosphorylated by ATP and combined with the hydrogen from NADPH2 to form G3P.
What is G3P used to regenerate
RuBP
What is G3P converted into
Sugars then converted into starch (storage carb) and cellulose (structural carb)
