Photosynthesis Flashcards
Name 5 things needed for photosynthesis
Soil; sunlight; chlorophyll; water; carbon dioxide
What is photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is the process where plants transform light energy into chemical energy
What do plants use chemical energy for?
They use it to make their own food
The light energy captured by plants is used to convert oxygen, water and minerals into carbon dioxide. True or false?
False. Light energy is used to convert carbon dioxide, water and minerals into oxygen.
What is chlorophyll?
The pigment that gives plants their green colour and helps in the process of photosynthesis
What other organisms undergo photosynthesis?
Algae and the emerald green sea slug
Write a short description of the process of photosynthesis
Plants take in water and carbon dioxide and use energy from the sun to turn them into food.
Within the plant cell, water is oxidized, gains electrons and is changed into oxygen. Carbon dioxide is reduced, loses electrons and turns into glucose. True or false?
False. Water is oxidized and loses electrons. Carbon dioxide is reduced and gains electrons.
What happens after the oxygen and glucose is made?
Oxygen is released and gluten is stored within the plant as energy.
Describe how you would draw a picture of the process of photosynthesis
Draw the sun in the corner and a plant in the middle with roots that go into the ground. Draw arrows coming from the sun labelled light energy, arrows labelled carbon dioxide, arrows coming out of the leaves on the other side labelled oxygen and an arrow going into the roots labelled water.
Give two reasons that we need plants
They make food that we eat and put oxygen into the air that we breathe`
What do you call the process plants go through to make food?
Photosynthesis
What does photosynthesis mean?
Photo = light and synthesis = to make or put together so it means to use light to make something, in this case food.
Where does photosynthesis happen?
It happens in all the green parts of the plant (usually the leaves)
What do plants do to store the glucose sugar?
They turn it into starch and store it in their leaves, stems, roots, flowers, fruits and seeds.
