Photosynthesis Flashcards
Name the chemical equation for photosynthesis
6CO2+6H2O=C6H12O6+6CO2
Name the word equation for photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide + water (using light energy and chlorophyll) = glucose and oxygen
What factors affect the rate of photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide levels, light intensity, temperature and water availability
How is light absorption maximised in a leaf?
Large surface area, Thin transparent cuticle (reduces water loss by evaporation and allows light to enter leaf), Lots of chloroplasts, Short distance from top to bottom
How is gas exchange maximised in a leaf?
Air spaces in the spongy mesophyll, Stomata (small pores on the bottom of leaves which allow carbon dioxide and oxygen to enter and leave the leaf)
What do plants use glucose for?
Respiration (to provide energy) , Storage (covered into starch and stored)
During the night does photosynthesis occur?
No because there is no light. Only respiration occurs at night
What is it called when the rates of photosynthesis and respiration are equal and what time of day does this occur?
It is called the compensation point and it occurs at dawn and dusk
What colour is hydrogencarbonate indicator when there are normal carbon dioxide levels?
Red
What colour is hydrogencarbonate indicator when there are increased carbon dioxide levels?
Yellow
What colour is hydrogencarbonate indicator when there are decreased carbon dioxide levels?
Purple
