Nervous System And Hormones Flashcards
What is a stimulus
Something that we respond to
What is a receptor
The thing that responds to stimulus (eg. Ears, eyes and nose)
What is an effector?
When a receptor is stimulated the effector (eg. Muscle) produces a response
Receptors and effectors are linked by a co-ordinators. What are these co-ordinators?
The brain and the spinal cord
What are the brain and the spinal cord known as?
The central nervous system
What do neurones do?
Neurones link receptors and effectors to the co-ordinator by sending nerve impulses.
Name an effector
Muscle
What is the difference betelween voluntary and reflex actions?
We deliberately choose to do voluntary actions and they involve conscious thought. Reflex actions do not involve conscious thought and occur more rapidly.
Why do reflex actions occur so rapidly?
Nerve impulses only travel to the spinal cord and there are few synapses (gaps between neurones) as these are the places where impulses travel more slowly.
How do hormones travel to target organs?
Through the blood
What organ produces insulin?
The pancreas
