Photosynethesis Flashcards
Photosynthesis equation
6CO2 + 6H2O → C6H12O6 + 6O2
Define and distinguish between autotrophs (producers) and heterotrophs (consumers)
Autotrophs are known as producers because they are able to make their own food from raw materials and energy.
Heterotrophs are known as consumers because they consume producers or other consumers. Dogs, birds, fish, and humans are all examples of heterotrophs.
Describe the structure of chloroplasts
The chloroplast has an inner and outer membrane with an empty intermediate space in between. Inside the chloroplast are stacks of thylakoids, called grana, as well as stroma, the dense fluid inside of the chloroplast. These thylakoids contain the chlorophyll that is necessary for the plant to go through photosynthesis.Apr
reactants and products of the light reactions
reactants-NADP, ADP, and water molecules
Products-ATP NADPH, and oxygen
Calvin cycle reactants and products
takes nadph, atp and carbon and turns it into Nadp+ and glucose
how does photosynthesis relate to light reactions
Photosynthesis takes place in two distinct stages. In the light reactions, energy from sunlight drives the synthesis of ATP and NADPH, coupled to the formation of O2 from H2O.
How does the calvin cycle relate to light reactions
Calvin cycle, the energized electrons from the light-dependent reactions provide the energy to form carbohydrates from carbon dioxide molecules. The light-independent reactions are sometimes called the Calvin cycle because of the cyclical nature of the process.
why is the calvin cycle dependent on the light-dependent reaction
The Calvin cycle refers to the light-independent reactions in photosynthesis that take place in three key steps. Although the Calvin Cycle is not directly dependent on light, it is indirectly dependent on light since the necessary energy carriers ( ATP and NADPH) are products of light-dependent reactions
