Homeostasis Flashcards
Homeostasis
is any self-regulating process by which an organism tends to maintain stability while adjusting to conditions that are best for its survival. If homeostasis is successful, life continues; if it’s unsuccessful, it results in a disaster or death of the organism.
Homeostasis Example
Body temperature control in humans is one of the most familiar examples of homeostasis.
Respond to Stimuli
any event or situation that evokes a response
Respond to Stimuli Example
You are hungry so you eat some food. A rabbit gets scared so it runs away. You are cold so you put on a jacket.
positive feedback loop
Feedback loop that causes a system to change further in the same direction.
Negative Feedback Loop
A feedback loop in which a system responds to a change by returning to its original state, or by decreasing the rate at which the change is occurring.
sensor
An action or change in behavior that occurs as a result of a stimulus.
effector
any organ or cell that ultimately responds to the stimulus
In general, what is a stimulus and a response as it pertains to feedback loops?
When a stimulus, or change in the environment, is present, feedback loops respond to keep systems functioning near a set point, or ideal level.
