Photosnynthesis Flashcards
What is a limiting factor?
Something which can restrict a process if there is not enough of it
What are carbon dioxide and water in the process of photosynthesis?
Raw materials
What are essentials of photosynthesis?
Chlorophyll and light energy
What are glucose and oxygen in the process of photosynthesis?
Products
What is the photosynthesis formula?
Carbon dioxide + water > glucose + oxygen
What is chlorophyll?
The chemical responsible for trapping light energy. It is the green pigment in leaves
Name the two stages of photosynthesis.
Light dependant stage and Carbon fixation
What is photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is when plants use light, carbon dioxide and water to produce food in the form of carbohydrate glucose
It is a process controlled by a series of enzyme controlled reactions
Describe the light dependant stage
Light energy form the sun is trapped by chlorophyll and is used to split water molecules into oxygen, hydrogen and energy.
When it’s split, oxygen is released as a waste product and hydrogen and ATP move onto stage two
What happens in carbon fixation?
This takes place in the chloroplast. It is made up of several enzyme controlled reactions that make a cycle. ATP and hydrogen from stage 1 are used as well as carbon dioxide from the air to produce carbohydrate glucose
What is a by-product in photosynthesis?
Oxygen
What are the 3 fates of glucose?
Starch, cellulose or used in respiration
What are limiting factors in photosynthesis?
Light intensity, temperature and carbon dioxide concentration
