What is a phytochrome?
A plant photoreceptor that can detect two kinds of red light.
What are the two types of red light absorbed by phytochromes?
Red light and far red light.
What red light is available during both day and night?
Far red light.
What are the two forms of the phytochrome?
Active and inactive.
What form does phytochrome take when absorbing each type of red light?
When absorbing red light, phytochrome takes the active form.
What processes does the active form of phytochrome influence?
Germination, flowering, etiolation, and the production of pigments & plastids.
What is the photoperiod?
How long the daylight period lasts.
How are plants divided according to when they flower in relation to photoperiodism?
Day neutral, short day & long day plants.
What are day neutral plants?
They only flower once mature, without relying on photoperiodism.
What are short day plants?
Flower as days shorten - spring and autumn.
What are long day plants?
Flower as days get longer - the summer.
