photons and electrons Flashcards
What is threshold frequency
the minimum frequency of incident radiation at which electrons will be emitted for a particular metal
Work Function
The minimum amount of energy needed to emit an electron from the surface of a particular metal
What will happen if you increase the intensity of the light
Increases the number of emitted electrons and increases the current of the system
What happens if the frequency increases
as the frequency increases the energy of each photon of light increases.
increasing the frequency increases the kinetic energy that means increasing the velocity
frequency does not effect the current
Explain the source of atomic emission spectra and their unique relationship to each element
Every atom has its own distinct set of energy levels. When gas is heated, electrons absorb every energy and move to a higher energy level further from the nucleus when the electrons fall back down they release the energy they absorbed in the form of light
Relate the line on the atomic spectrum to electron transitions between energy levels
Each transition between energy levels result in the emission of a photon with a particular wavelength. The larger the transition the more energy and the lower the wavelength
What is the significane of the photoelectric effect
it establishes the quantum theory an illustrates the particle nature of light
Define the photoelectric effect
the process that occurs when light shines on a metal and electrons are ejected
