Newtons laws Flashcards
Weight
fg as the gravitational force the Earth exerts on any object on or near its surface
Normal Force
as the perpendicular force exerted by a surface on an object in contact with it
Frictional force
the force that opposes the motion of an object and acts parallel to the surface with which the object is in contact with
Why is it easier to pull an object at an angle than it is to push it at an angle
When a mass is pulled at the the vertical component reduces the force pushing into the ground therefore reduced the normal force FN=FG-FV
When mass is pushed at an angle the vertical component increases the force pushing into the ground and therefore increases the normal force Fn= Fg+Fv
What increses or decreases the frictional force
the material that the object and surface are made of
State Newtons first law
An object continues in a state of rest or uniform (moving with constant) velocity unless it is acted upon by a net or resultant force
Define inertia
As the property of an object that causes it to resist a change in its state of rest or uniform motion
State Newtons 2nd law of motion
When a net force is applied to an object of mass it accelerates in the direction of the net force. The acceleration is directly proportional to the net force and inversely proportional to the mass
State Newtons 3rd law of motion
When object A exerts a force on object B, Object B simultaneously exerts an oppositely directed force of equal magnitude on object A.
What is the parallel component
acts parallel to the slope and pulls the object down the incline
what is the perpendicular component `
pushes the object into the incline. This component is used in the calculation of the normal force
When is the normal force equal to the perpendicular component of gravity
When there are no applied or tension forces acting on the box at an angle
What is static friction
Frictional force on a stationary object that opposes motion of the object. As the parallel component increases the magnitude of the force of static friction will also increase until fsmax is reached.
What is kinetic friction
the frictional force that opposes the motion of the moving object. This force is constant and acts while the object is in motion
Why is it important to to travel with a seatbelt
When travelling in a car without a seatbelt, if the car suddenly stops, the passenger continues moving. the seatbelt will apply a net force that oppose the motion of the passenger
