Free Variation
allophones of the same phoneme can occur in the same environment. (the different allophones carry no separate meaning other than contextual meaning)
Minimal Pairs
words that differ by one sound. This means that the sounds that are different belong to separate phonemes.
Complementary Distrubution
If two different sounds occur in mutually exclusive environments and DO NOT overlap, they are considered in complementary distribution. This means that they are allophones of the same phoneme
