Sound inventory

International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)
alphabetic system based primarily on the Latin Alphabet.
Vocal tract
air passages above the vocal cords.
Articulators
any organ in your mouth and throat whose movement produces speech sounds.
Bilabial
speech sound articulated with both lips.
Alveolar
sounds produced with the tongue close to or touching the roof of your mouth.
Labio-dentals
sound made with your lips and teeth.
Inter-dental
sounds pronounced by placing the tip of the tongue between the teeth.
Palato-alveolar
articulated with the tongue raised towards the palate and the tip of the tongue against the roof of the mouth.
Manner of articulation
interaction of the tongue, lips and palate when making a speech sound.
Fricatives
sound produced by bringing the mouth into position to block the passage of the air stream.
Vowel frontness
where in the mouth sounds are articulated.
Vowel height
where the tongue is raised or lowered in order to sound out a particular vowel.
Diphthongs
combination of two adjacent vowel sounds.
Monophthong
vowel that has a single perceived auditory quality.
