Phonics Instruction 1 Flashcards
Analytic Phonics
Similar to analogy phonics, but each phoneme introduced and segmented must be a part of a previously learned word. Ex. Students know “bank” and “pretty” and teacher prompts students to segment /pr/ and /ank/ to get “prank”
Analogy Phonics
Discuss a familiar word with students and simply make a textual connection between a new word that is closely related. Ex: students know “bank”and teacher introduces “prank”
Synthetic phonics
Starts at phoneme level and builds towards the word level in a systematic and explicit way
Embedded phonics
If you come across an appropriate word while reading a passage, you can use analytic or analogy methods. Least popular approach. Not systematic or explicit, relies on addressing a word type as it happens.
Spelling Phonics
Phonics through spelling. Break words into phonemes, then choose letters to match individual phonemes.
What is the rime of the second syllable in “basement”
-ent
What is an affix?
A morpheme that is attached to a word stem to form a new meaning.
Consonant Blend
Two or three letters that come together to form a phonemic blend, but the sounds that distinguish one letter from the other remain. “Blend is a a word that contains two blends: /bl/ and /nd/
Consonant Digraphs
Union of letters that create an entirely new sound. /ch/ /sh/
To distinguish some digraphs that have multiple pronunciations like /th/, use brackets [th] or Greek alphabet /q/ for the “th” in “rather” or “ thistle”
What are the toe major competences for successful reading?
Decoding and Comprehension
Etymology
Study of word origins, as well as the different meanings the word has had throughout history.

Study of spelling patterns and conventions
Sight words
One hundred or so of the most common words. Helps students quicken pace of reading and eases sounding out process for more difficult words.
Ex. If, the, is, not, to, and
Automacicity
Ability to quickly and easily decode words (different from fluency) Like knowing keys on keyboard to type automatically and allowing ideas to be the focus.
