Prosody
The appropriate inflection or expression with which a student reads. It is directly related to comprehension which is synonymous with understanding.
What is reading fluency?
It is the sum of reading rate and accuracy. It is directly proportional to comprehension which is directly proportional to prosody
What is primary relationship between fluency and comprehension?
Fluency is prosodic reading, which reflects the student’s comprehension
When is it reasonable to begin formal assessments of reading fluency?
Halfway into the first grade.
How does a teacher assess “words correct per minute”?
As the student reads for one minute, the teacher follows along on his or her copy of the passage and marks misspoken words, skipped words, self-corrected words, etc. with a slash (/) over such errors. Then the correct words are added up to get the WCPM.
What is WCPM for first grade?
Around 60 WCPM
What is WCPM for second grade?
Around 90 for second grade.
What is WCPM for third grade?
Around 110.
What is a reasonable expectation for WCPM improvement on a weekly basis?
Between 1 and 2 correct words per minute.
What is an appropriate text for assessing reading fluency?
A text which the student misses no more than 5% of the words.
What fluency-building instructional strategies is most like lap reading?
Reading with a mentor
