- does not capture allophonic detail
- aka broad transcription, has primarily base symbols and few diacritics

- used when listeners are transcribing actual productions of a speaker
-aka narrow transcription, diacritics are used in addition to base symbols
- degree of detail included depends on purpose of transcription
