Alliteration
the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words e.g. ‘sweet birds sang’
Assonance
resemblance of sound between syllables of nearby words, arising particularly from the rhyming of two or more stressed vowels or from the use of identical consonants with different vowels e.g. sonnet, porridge; killed, cold, culled
Consonance
the recurrence of similar-sounding consonants in proximity e.g. discreet, shut.
Onomatopoeia
the formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named e.g. sizzle.
Rhythm
the sense of movement in speech marked by the stress, timing, and quantity of syllables.
Rhyme
repetition of similar sounds (usually the exact same phonemes) in the final stressed syllables and any following syllables of two or more words.
