Why do learners pronunciation errors?

A

A particular sound may not exist in the morher tongue (phoenemic gap)

A sound does exist in L1, but not as a separate phoneme. (I.e the learner does not perceive it as a distinct sound) ex. β€œShip/sheep” disctinction difficulut for Spanish speakers.
