Phonation, Aspiration and VOT Flashcards
What is the function of the cricothyroid muscles in the larynx?
Lengthens the vocal folds
They pull the thyroid cartilage down and forward, this lengthening causes the vocal folds to vibrate faster, thus raising pitch
What is the epiglottis?
The entrance of the larynx
Elastic cartilage
Used for covering the trachea when swallowing
Can be used to produce epiglottal consonants (rare)
What are the two types of vocal cords?
True vocal cords - aka vocal cords - enable us to produce sounds
False vocal cords - aka vestibular fold - part of the vocal articulation during glottal stops and pressed phonation
What are the vocal cords attached to?
Connected to the thyroid cartilage in the front and connected to the arytenoid cartilages in the back
How are the vocal folds curing breathing?
wide apart
How are the focal folds when producing voiceless sounds?
apart (abducted)
how are the vocal folds when producing voiced sounds?
tensed/closed (adducted) -
vibration
how are the vocal folds during a glottal stop?
firm closure
How do the length of vocal folds determine pitch?
if the length of vocal folds themselves is long, the voice is deeper
when the vocal folds are stretched long, the pitch is higher
what is the scientific principle that draws the vocal folds together?
The Bernoulli effect: vocal folds brought together by intrinsic larynx muscles. Once closed, the air stream creates a pressure against the closed vocal folds until they are blown apart.
What are the different types of phonation?
-whisper - produced through turbulences generated by the friction of the air in and above the larynx with vocal folds not vibrating
-voiced/modal
-breathy - vocal fold vibration is inefficient - incomplete closure of the glottis
-creaky - low tension and heavy vibrating mass are responsible for the slower and irregular vibration
What is VOT?
Voice onset time - the duration of the period of time between the release of the stop and the beginning of vocal fold vibration
