Connected speech Flashcards
What are connected speech processes?
changes in sound due to the overlap of articulations or timings of gestures due to the dynamic nature of speech.
what is the connected speech process?
- coarticulation/ assimilation
- reduction
- elision
- epenthesis
- lenition
What does coarticulation/ assimilation refer to?
Coarticulation emphasises on the [phonetic process] where one sound becomes more similar to another
Assimilation refers to the [phonological process] of what rules a sound goes through to become another one.
What are the 2 different types of coarticulation?
Preservative/carryover coarticulation - the preceding sound affects the following sound (A->B)
Anticipatory coarticulation - the following sound affects the preceding sound (A<-B)
What does reduction refer to?
in certain contexts, when vowels get reduced e.g. become shorter and their quality becomes more central
What does elision refer to?
reduction at a more extreme level: apparant disappearance of a whole segment
what does epenthesis refer to?
insertion of an additional sound, as features of one sound overlap those of another
e.g. “saw a” - intrusive r
what does lenition refer to?
a weakening process
what are the two types of lenition?
spirantisation - a segment becoming a fricative
debuccalisation - losing oral articulation to become a glottal
