What is a specific phobia?
Phobia of an object, such as an animal or body part or situation
e.g flying, spiders
What is social anxiety?
Phobia od a social situation such as public speaking or using a public toilet
What is agoraphobia?
Phobia of being outisde or in a public place
What are the behavioural characteristics of phobias?
Panic
Individual may panic in the presence of the phobic stimulus
Avoidance
Individual may go to a lot of effort to not come into contact witht eh phobic stimulus
Endurance
Person chooses to remain in the presence of phobic stimulus
What are the emotional characteristics of phobias?
Anxiety
Fear
Emotional response is unreasonable

Selective attention to the phobic stimulus
