Phloem and Bark Flashcards
What is phloem
living tissue that transports the organic compounds from photosynthesis
Where does phloem originate
vascular cambium
Sugars move in the phloem from
sources to sinks
Source
UP. Location where it is produced or stored
Sink
DOWN. Location where it is used
Connections between cells allow
sap to flow
Sieve tubes (angiosperms)
closely associated with one or more companion cells. no nucleus so it needs them
Sieve cells (gymnosperms)
cells overlap. phloem moves from cell to cell through pits. angiosperms have them too
Why is phloem thin
not much is made in the cambium. phloem is only active for one year
What is bark
the outermost layers of a woody stem
Purpose of bark
- protection from bacteria/fungi/insects/animals
- protection from attack with cinnamon, tennis, juglone
- protection from fire
Outer bark
composed of old inner bark (phloem) and cork is added to waterproof
Outer bark development
- epidermis
- periderm
- cork cambium
- dead phloem cells get pushed to outer bark
How does bark cope with tree expansion
phloem grows before the xylem. phloem dies and gets suberized by cork cambium and then becomes innermost layer of dead portion of bark. outermost layers split or shed
How do some trees get cambium cells oxygen
