Germination, Sprouts, etc Flashcards
Masting event
group of trees all having a big year for tree and fruit production
Cotyledon
stored energy
2 types of germination
hypogeal and epigeal
hypogeal
cotyledons remain at or below the soil surface
epigeal
cotyledons emerge from soil surface
Advantages for hypogeal and epigeal germination
H: More protection. E: More energy
Photoblastic
germination influenced by light
Once seeds imbile water…
their metabolisms ramp up
Do seeds stay viable forever?
No
Vegetative production
root suckers and stump sprouts (identical to the parent)
Root suckers
new shoots that arise from adventitious buds developing on roots. sometimes found in injured trees
Stump sprouts
arise from an intact root system from dormant buds when the dominant shoot is removed or damaged. results in death or injury of main stem
Cuttings
several branches and twigs of some species can form roots and establish (branches ripped off in a storm and carried away where they produce genetically identical tree)
Layering
formation of roots on branches that touch the ground or go through it. requires moist soil
