Purpose of phlebotomy
collect blood for laboratory analysis

what to do with collected specimen?
a. can be tested at the office
b. taken to an outside lab for testing: must be placed in a biohazard bag and accompanied by a laboratory request
Types of blood collections:
- arterial puncture: performed in a hospital setting
- venipuncture
- skin puncture
Venipuncture (VP)
puncturing of a vein for the removal of a venous blood sample
Methods of venipuncture
- vacuum tube
- butterfly and syringe
Characteristics of Vacuum tube venipuncture:
-fastest
-most convenient
most often used
When to use butterfly and syringe?
for small veins and sclerosed (hardened veins)
Patient Preparation for venipuncture
- most tests do not require patient preparation
- most common preparation: fasting (abstaining from food or drinks except water for a specified amount of time before VP
- avoid medication
Basal state
resting state of the body early in the morning after fasting for approximately 12 hours
Identification of the patient
- confirm to patient identifiers such as name and DOB
- avoids collecting specimen on wrong patient
- avoids wrong labelling of spcimen
