Philosophy Of OT Flashcards
Philosophical base addresses these questions…
A. What is the meaning of human life
B. What are values, beliefs, and principles that guides ones behavior from day to day
C. What are the professions values and beliefs?
- what are desirable in and of the profession
- what are the ethics or standards of the profession
What is the three overall questions Adolf Meyer poses
- What is the nature of man?
- How does a man know what he knows?
- What is desirable?
What is the nature of man?
- Holism
- OT views man as an active being
- Human Occupation Model
OT uses a holistic approach to treatment
How does man know what he knows ?
Meyers believes a man knows what he knows by doing. Doing what?
OT use some:
- Purposeful activities
- Occupation: meaningful and purposeful human engagement
- Goal directed behavior
***Goal must be meaningful to the individual so that participation is active and voluntary
Through doing a man learns to adapt.
What is desirable?
Meyers believes that quality of life comes from ones achieving
Mary Reilly- “ Man, through the use of hands as they are energized by mind and will, can influence the state of his own health.”
Goals of OT foster achieving and ultimately independent of performance.
Through achieving, improvement in the quality of life for those whose functional ability is impaired can be achieved
OT’s use occupation to:
- A. Establish a skill that has not yet developed
B. Remediate or store a skill or ability that is impaired - Compensate, modify, or adapt an activity or environment to enhance performance
- Maintain and enhance capabilities without which performance in everyday life activities would decline
- Promote health and wellness to enable or enhance performance in everyday life activities
- Prevent barriers to performance, including preventing disability
Why do we need a philosophy?
- Serves as a set of values, beliefs, and principles and defines goals or purpose of OT
- It defines the reason for existence for OT or guides our actions and interventions
- Helps OT practitioners to define the reason for the existence of OT
