Occupations (what is it?)
- Everything people do everyday
- Meaningful and purposeful human engagement
- “Union between the mind and the body”
- Life itself is the process of engagement in occupation”

How does occupation occur?
In context- where it’s occurring/ environment
Over time
Individually Or with others/ co-occupations
What is the significance of occupation?
- Support health and engagement in life
- Power - able to change and making change
- Means to an end - use occupation as a strategy as well as goal
Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s)
Activities gears toward taking care of ones own body/ BADLs or PADLs
Instruments of Daily Living
Activities that support daily life within the home and community requiring more complex interaction than basic ADL’s
Holistic
Considers all aspects of the persons mind, body, social environment
Purpose of OT services
- Habilitation: teaching new skill
- Rehabilitation: teaching an old skill
- Health and wellness promotion: teaching to staying healthy
- disability and non- disability needs
Definitions
The application of occupation as a therapeutic modality
Occupation is intentional performance organized in number and kind to meet the demands of self maintenance and identity in the family and community
The art and science of helping people do the day-to -day activities that are important to them despite impairment, disability, or handicap
The difference between life and living
