Philosophy And Ethics Argument For The Exsistance Of God 3:1:5/6 Flashcards
What’s the cosmological argument
The cosmological argument argues that God exists from a philosophical study. St Thomas Aquinas made three ways to prove Gods existence
Cosmological argument: What’s way 1 of Thomas Aquinas argument
Way1: The motion
Things in the universe are in motion so it must be moved by something else but this cannot go on for Infinity because there would be no fits mover so it must be God.
Cosmological argument: What’s way 2 of Thomas Aquinas argument
Way2: The causation
Everything has a cause so there must be a first efficient cause and so this must be God
Cosmological argument: What’s way 3 of Thomas Aquinas argument
Way3: The way of contingencies
All material things and contingent has once not existed (table, chairs, humans), so for things to exist there must be a non-contingent being that’s always existed, this is God
What’s the modern form of the cosmological argument
- cause and effect is the basic features of the world
- science shows that when investigated efficiently any effect has a chase and any cause has an effect
- any caused to exists must be caused by someone else
- so the first causer of all things must be God
What’s the importance to catholics of cosmological argument to the nature of God(3)
Refer to SOWA
- God is the origin of everything-he is the unmoved mover, first cause, non-contingent being
- He’s within and beyond the universe and has no beginnings or end. He’s infinite and eternal.
- Gods a mystery more a question than an awnser
“Go is infinitely greater than all his work” CCC300
What’s the atheist argument to the cosmological argument(3)
- If everything needs a cause then what caused God
- It is possible for matter to be eternal and not created so a first cause would be needed
- not everything needs to be explained
What’s the catholic response to atheists argument against the cosmological argument(3)
- The Big Bang is less believable than God creating us
- The universe is too vast and complex to happen by chance
- humans are too individualistic and complex to not be created by something
What is the design argument
Gone beats philosopher St Thomas Aquinas said the world must have a designer
What is Palsey watch argument theory
He said if you come across a watch you would understand there was a watchmaker as it’s so complex so if a watch needs a designer than so does the universe.
What’s the modern form of the design argument(3)
Refer to SOWA
- the world works according to complex laws working together
- DNA forms all living things so it indicates a designer because of the structure of organisms
- evolution is complex so it must be made by God
“The existence of God the creator can be known with certaincy through his work” CCC286
Why is the design argument important for catholics to see the nature of God
- Gods existence can be demonstrated by looking at his creation
- the universe works on forded, logical principles designed by God which enables humans ti make discovery’s
- God is the creator and keeps the world in existence
What’s atheist views on the design argument
- design argument lacks the design for certain things such as volcanoes
- all evidence for design can be explained with science and not God
- Design argument doesn’t talk about design of Dinosaurs
What’s catholics response to atheist argument against the design argument
Refer to SOWA
The belief that the world was created by chance requires more faith to than if it was created by God
faith doesn’t require proof
“Faith is assurance of all things” Hebrew1:3
